DEFORMABLE CONTOUR MODELS FOR DIGITIZING A PRINTED BRAINSTEM ATLAS Nirmal J. Patel Old Dominion University, 2016 Co-Directors: Dr. Dean J. Krusienski Dr. Michel A. Audette The brainstem is a part of the brain that is connected to the cerebrum and the spinal cord. Ten out of twelve pairs of cranial nerves emerge from the brainstem. The cranial nerves transmit information between the brain and various parts of the body. Due to its anatomical and physiological relevance, a descriptive digital brainstem is important for neurosurgery planning and simulation. For both of these neurosurgical applications, the complexity of the brainstem requires a digital atlas approach to segmentation that maps intensities to tissues rather than less descriptive voxel or surface-based approaches. However, a descriptive brainstem atlas with adequate details for neurosurgery planning and simulation has not been developed to date. Fortunately, various textbooks contain 2D representations of the brainstem at various longitudinal coordinates. The aim of this thesis is to describe a minimally supervised method to segment sketches coinciding with slices of the brainstem featuring labeled contours. This thesis also describes a deformable contour model approach, emphasizing a 1-simplex framework, to reconstruct a 3D volume from 2D slices.

A Hybrid 3D Colon Segmentation Method Using Modified Geometric Deformable Models
Introduction: Nowadays virtual colonoscopy has become a reliable and efficient method of detecting primary stages of colon cancer such as polyp detection. One of the most important and crucial stages of virtual colonoscopy is colon segmentation because an incorrect segmentation may lead to a misdiagnosis. Materials and Methods: In this work, a hybrid method based on Geometric Deformable Models...
متن کاملA Modified Character Segmentation Algorithm for Farsi Printed Text Using Upper Contour Labelling
In this paper, a modified segmentation algorithm for printed Farsi words is presented. This algorithm is based on a previous work by Azmi that uses the conditional labeling of the upper contour to find the segmentation points. The main objective is to improve the segmentation results for low quality prints. To achieve this, various modifications on local baseline detection, contour labeling an...

متن کاملProstate Segmentation and Regions of Interest Detection in Transrectal Ultrasound Images
The early detection of prostate cancer plays a significant role in the success of treatment and outcome. To detect prostate cancer, imaging modalities such as TransRectal UltraSound (TRUS) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are relied on. MRI images are more comprehensible than TRUS images which are corrupted by noise such as speckles and shadowing. However, MRI screening is costly, often una...
متن کاملA Topology Preserving Level Set Method for Geometric Deformable Models
Active contour and surface models, also known as deformable models, are powerful image segmentation techniques. Geometric deformable models implemented using level set methods have advantages over parametric models due to their intrinsic behavior, parameterization independence, and ease of implementation. However, a long claimed advantage of geometric deformable models — the ability to automati...
